Home Cooked Food Photography

Everybody cooks at home and even if you dont cook, you still need to BUY food and either eat out or again, eat at home.

Just this morning, my wife cooked her favourite, Home Cooked Corn Soup. She laid everything out on the dining table and i decided to so something about it. Just for the fun of it, I decided to do food photography within 5 mins! Well, I was already hungry, so it had to be done THAT fast.

I grabbed my camera, flash and lens…and told my wife to drip some soup onto the corn. Within 5 mins, all was done.

The trick here is that i used a standard lens, a canon 50/1.8, instead of wide angle lens. The perspective of a 50mm lens would be good enough to make viewers focus more on the details of the food while maintaining a good depth of field. I chose an aperture opening of f5 instead of shooting it wide open at f1.8. At f5, you would get a nice depth of field for the corn and the spoon to remain sharp, while the rest are blurred out of focus.

If you want to know why i shoot at a very fast shutter speed of 1/1000… For the old canon 1dmk1, that is the kind of shutter speed that u can do indoors. An amazing old technology.

Distance of lens to subject was about 40-50 cm, handheld.

RAW processed in Lightroom 2

Nikon SB-28 —- iso100, f64, 1/64, Zoom: 24mm, Flash head angled at 45 degree upwards.

The schedule for last friday was like this: Ms Dewi arrives in Singapore from Indonesia on friday morning. She would meet her partner, Mr Frido, who works in Singapore by noon. Later in the afternoon, Dewi and Frido would do a couple profile photoshoot at Marina Barrage, Singapore. Then…it RAINED! But that was a great blessing in disguise. Although it rained then stopped and rained again, everyone was in a great mood to make the photoshoot happen. Ms Dewi would fly back to Indonesia in a couple of days… and i think Frido would miss her alright!
